The Honors College Facility is a small renovation
and addition to a non-descript brick and concrete
seven-story dormitory and classroom building, which
is entirely orthogonal in plan and elevation.
The Honors College Director stated that he wanted
a facility building “brilliant and modern
to keep vital the intellectual life of the University”.
The design concept derives from the idea of expansion:
not only of the building but also the expansion
of thought required of Honors College students.
Since the existing building is very conventional
the Honors College addition is expressed in an
opposite manner literally oozing out of rigid
geometry, surrounding the existing red pines and
moving toward the free form pond.
