NORTH HILLS CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH

Troy, Michigan
Square Feet: 16,800

Three physical elements share highest symbolic significance in the Christian Reformed Faith: the Communion Table, the Pulpit, and the Baptismal Font. All architectural considerations have been aimed at focusing on these elements, not only within the Sanctuary itself, but from any point within or without the building. The congregation’s concentric seating arrangement (which allows persons to face one another instead of backs of heads), the dished floor, the walls, the entrances, aisles, openings to Narthex and Courtyard, all reinforce this theme.

Finally, the roof form itself, with resultant admission of natural light, completes in the third dimension the planning emphasis.

The simple six-sided pitched roof has been so placed over the eccentric focal area as to naturally cause the supporting walls to increase in height as they surround the Sanctuary from rear to front. In addition, the two foremost segments are raised upward for even greater height and, ultimately, to frame a great light scoop which captures the southern sunlight in the daytime and allow the passerby some nighttime interest.
