THE UNIVERSITY CENTER AT GAYLORD /
KIRTLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE M-TEC EDUCATION CENTER
Gaylord, Michigan
Square Feet: 46,621
The design problem was to create one facility to
house two types of students: traditional students
in the University Center and vocational students
in the Technical Education Center. In either case
the architectural image must portray that students
are preparing for high-skill, high-wage, high demand
careers.
The floor plan solution separates the University
Center and Technical Center in two parts but flowing
freely together split by one shared entry, commons,
and Learning Resource Center. This allows and
encourages a blending of the so-called blue collar
and white-collar disciplines.
The unique element is that all spaces have windows
inside and outside so that the teaching activities
are displayed and create the building image.
